“Inclusive Language: Gender and Sexual Identities in French to English Translation”

This project culminated my academic journey in the Master’s in Translation and Interpreting program at New York University.

The thesis presented methods for inclusive language when translating texts from French (source) to English (target) using excerpts from Morgan N. Lucas's book Ceci n’est pas un livre sur le genre.

The research primarily highlights that language inclusivity and gender neutrality are possible in the French language, despite being a grammatical gender language that is traditionally dependent on binary gender forms. It goes on to prove that there is interest in using and developing inclusive language methods as demonstrated through identity-first language, plain language, and conscious language within the translated texts.
